Patrick Nevins and Man In A Cage

Author Patrick Nevins’ novel Man in a Cage paired with a Chateau Teyssier 'Pezat'

About the Book: Gabon, 1892: American primatologist Richard Garner constructs a cage deep in West Africa's rainforest to learn the language of chimpanzees—a study he believes will prove Darwin's theory of evolution.

His cage protects him from gorillas and leopards, but fails to shield him from his enemies in the French colony and the press. Stymied by dogmatic priests and lacking a phonograph to record the chimpanzees' speech, he doggedly pursues his study.

Populated by bureaucrats, hunters, missionaries, and the indigenous peoples whose lands and lives they have intruded upon, Man in a Cage evokes life on the ground during the Scramble for Africa.

About the Beverage: Patrick recommends pairing MAN IN A CAGE with a Chateau Teyssier 'Pezat,' an affordable Bordeaux, because “Garner occasionally takes a brief respite at a nearby mission, where he enjoys a meal and a glass of claret, a wine from the Bordeaux region of France. Enjoy a glass while reading about Garner's incredible journey”.

About the Author: Patrick Nevins is an associate professor of English at Ivy Tech Community College in Columbus, Indiana. He earned his MFA from Purdue University and his BA from the University of Louisville. His stories have appeared in Crab Creek Review and and other journals. MAN IN A CAGE is his first book.

MAN IN A CAGE is available from Bookshop.org, Amazon.com and other online retailers.
