Jean Burgess and That Summer She Found Her Voice: A Retro Novel

Author Jean Burgess and her retro novel That Summer She Found Her Voice with a cappuccino

About the Book: Set against a backdrop of the 1970s Baltimore music scene, this is the story of 23-year-old Margie Stevens as she pulls herself out of heartbreak-induced depression and begins a journey of self-discovery. Clarifying her own views on emerging feminism, social injustice, and spirituality - all while touring across the country as a singer in King Vido's Swing Band - Margie encounters sexist and moral challenges that cause her to question her future path. In her struggle to speak up, she begins to find her authentic voice.

A retro read that's both entertaining and thought-provoking while sipping on a hot beverage.

About the Beverage: Jean recommends pairing her novel with a cappuccino from Vaccaro's Italian Pastry's in Baltimore's Little Italy because “this is a favorite beverage of my protagonist, Margie (and who doesn't love a frothy cappuccino?).”

About the Author: Jean Burgess is a writer, editor, playwright, and workshop presenter. As a former professional stage actor and director, much of her written work relates to the performing arts, including both her debut fiction, That Summer She Found Her Voice, and her nonfiction, Collaborative Stage Directing: A Guide to Creating and Managing a Positive Theatre Environment (Routledge/Taylor & Francis, 2019). Before diving into a writing career, Jean taught theatre and speech communications on both the secondary and college levels for twenty-three years. She holds an M.A. in Theatre from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. in Educational Theatre from New York University.
